Best of The City Typography

Custom Typography for the Best of the City

CHALLENGE

Desert Companion magazine wanted to take a new approach to the annual Best of The City editorial feature. Given the new visual language of the section, I was tasked with bringing the issue together through a special “Best of the City” typography.

PROJECT ROLE

Typography Design

COVER DESIGN

SOLUTION

An Ode to Art Deco

The visual language of the 2024 Best of the City section consisted of an art deco inspired ornamentation using fine gold lines inlaid on black. The black and gold color scheme and fine lines were essential to conveying the sense of “Best of the Best” that the section needed to evoke.

To engage with the Best of the City winners, we created and sent out congratulatory letters and collectable poker chips to those who made the list. Included in their letter was a “Winners Kit” consisting of premade social posts and guides on how to share their achievement.

The type was sketched out by hand in Procreate, refined in Adobe Illustrator, and brought to life in Adobe Photoshop
